Artist Bio
I was born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1955. During my high school years, I developed a strong interest in art and design, an interest that led me in 1974 to pursue architecture at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. In 1977, I continued my education at Ohio State University. While studying architecture, I realized my true passion was rooted in creative expression through painting and drawing. This realization inspired me to transfer to the Department of Art, and in 1979, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting and drawing.
I spent nearly four decades living throughout South Florida and the Florida Keys, where the region’s vibrant atmosphere deeply influenced my creative development. In 2016, following the passing of my parents, I returned to my childhood home in Portsmouth, where I now devote my creative energy to both visual art and music. Today, I continue to create with gratitude and a deep commitment to the lifelong pursuit of artistic expression.
Artist Statement
Exploring abstract expressionism allows me to create immersive compositions that originate from intuition, imagination, and emotional impulse. My work is driven by a desire to create vivid, engaging imagery that invites prolonged observation and interpretation. From the very first gesture, each painting begins as a living entity, emerging through movement, energy, and a willingness to respond rather than control.
My process is guided by an ongoing exploration of color, form, texture, and spatial relationships. As paint meets surface, I observe and reflect, allowing each decision to inform the next. There is no rigid plan; instead, the work evolves through a fluid exchange between conscious awareness and instinctive action. This unfolding creates a dynamic dialogue between myself and the painting, where each mark carries both intention and discovery. The dialogue continues to evolve until the composition reaches a point of visual resonance-balanced, compelling, evocative, and complete on its own terms.
Throughout my work, contemplative and dreamlike imagery often emerges, infused with cosmic and mystical undertones. These elements are not literal representations but suggestive atmospheres-spaces where perception, memory, and imagination intersect. I am drawn to the ambiguity of abstraction, where meaning is not dictated but discovered, allowing each viewer to form a personal connection with the work.
Every finished piece stands as a visual record of a specific moment-an accumulation of my thoughts, experiences, and emotional state at the time of its creation. In this sense, each painting becomes a timestamp of consciousness, capturing something both fleeting and enduring. The final image becomes an extension of reality, shaped by inner experience.
For me, the act of creation is deeply spiritual and meditative, rooted in ritual and sustained attention. It is both demanding and restorative, requiring complete immersion while offering a profound sense of fulfillment. The process itself becomes as meaningful as the finished work.
While words can only approximate the essence of what I create, I invite viewers to engage directly with the work and discover their own interpretations within it.
